Website Change!

I’ve decided to change my website as I feel it needs an update to it’s look and usability.

This is what my website looked like before, it had different html pages for each webpage and I’ve found out that it creates a less of a usability for the user. I wanted my website to be a easy to use website and research showed that having a one-page website is a much more safer option as it fits with the ‘one-click’ protocol.

It was pretty basic and I felt i needed to add something else to make it a bit more visually appealing.

The changes that I made were as follows;

  • making the website into a one-page site
  • changing the white background into a textured paper background
  • having 2 navigation bars, one that stays at the top of the page and another for the home page
  • properly centring the website

So now my website looks like this;

I feel much happier having this as my website, there are a few more adjustments I would like to make..but for the moment I am pleased with this.

I overcame a lot of problems that I had, there were quite a few as I am still getting used to web designing and coding. When I first started to update my code, i made a back up copy of my original version just in case i needed to start again.

I was quite scared changing my website because I wasn’t too sure what I could do as my coding skills are quite limited, luckily the internet has all the answers! Changing from separate webpages to a one-page website proved to be a challenge as when I did try to put everything together the alignments and sections were all confused and all over the place. I had to ask for help from a friend and they showed me where i went wrong and i continued to work on my code.

Changing the white background was bit of a struggle as i had to put it into another container, but what i had tried to do was to put it into a wrapper but that didn’t work as it would just stay on the left hand side, even when i changed the margin and padding. I had originally planned to have a different sort of background which look like this;

but the top part would get cut off, so that’s something I’m going to work on, for when I develop further.

The new navigation bar idea came to me as I was making lists of what needs to be done, and i was using post-it notes to do so. And I thought that it would create a paper theme as the background is a paper texture. Also adding colour to my pages makes my pages pop!

Something else I would work on is the way my work is being presented, I feel as though there could be something improved in that i think I’ll try to find a way to make that better.

4 Week Project | Alphabet Photography

We were given another brief which included photography. I personally really love photography as I’ve been interested in cameras for a very long time. So it was quite obvious that I would be very interested in this specific brief.

We were told to have gone around, anywhere and make an a-z for alphabet photography.

We were told to see things in a different light, different perspective! And I think in doing so, you’ll realise a lot of things that may not have occurred to you before.

The examples above are Alphabet photography that I quite liked, especially the  one in the middle, it takes basic things, basic shapes to then been seen as a letter of the alphabet. This sort of photography shows us that if we took more time from our day to look at where we are there are a lot of different things that can be seen.

I also really liked the last one as it reminds me of New York City, in a busy city full of life there’s so much being walked past that you don’t essentially see it unless you stop and look. Though some of those photos are just letters that are on a surface.

4 Week Project | Flash Animation & GarageBand: Result

The outcome for my Flash animation was this;

I started of with working with GarageBand as I felt that animating to the music made much more sense, I wanted some subtle and acoustic as it would fit appropriately to idea I had. I tried a few different types of instruments like the guitar, but it didn’t found very good. Using the piano section of GarageBand was definitely successful as i managed to come up with a 15 second clip of soundtrack.

When I started to animate, I started at the second part of the soundtrack as I had seen the sort of abstract animation I wanted for it. A simple blocks and lines, popping up and randomly changing, the soundtrack was very bouncy and it jumped a lot as well as speed up. I then moved onto the last section of the soundtrack and I felt it was quite dots came into my head and I used the Spray Brush Tool to create random areas of dots. I randomised the thickness of the brush to give it a much more splattered look. the beginning part of the soundtrack was quite difficult to animate as I wanted something to do with blocks moving across the screen. What I had finessed with, I;m not entirely happy because I felt that it could have been better and a lot more synced.

Syncing animation to music was a difficult challenge as you need precise anchors to determine where the animation would go.

Flash as a software to use was fairly okay, but it’s not something that i’d want to use as much because with other animation software there’s a lot you can do and achieve.

4 Week Project | Flash Animation & GarageBand: Research

For the first mini project we were set to do an animation using Adobe Flash, the animation a piece of music that you created on garageband. We were told to use a stage of 22mmx16mm, and that the animation had to be at least 15 seconds. 15 seconds may not sound like a lot but a lot of work goes into animation as there are many different ways you can structure animation.

I’ve previously worked with Flash, and working with it again refreshed my known knowledge about the interface and how to use it. I felt quite confident about the brief, and got to researching Flash animations on the internet. Flash as a software isn’t something that I would use to do a complicated animation as it seems to be a software that not many agree on.

Here’s an example of a flash animation that I also took inspiration from;

It has basic shapes that you can easily move around and control in Flash. A simplistic idea which showcases detail as it syncs up very well with the soundtrack. I liked and chose this animation because I felt that it was well thought out and the repetitiveness of the shapes kept with the theme.

Recently we’ve been looking at animation, and how much it has progressed since 1914, when Gertie the Dinosaur was created by Winsor McCay. You can see the amount of effort that was put into drawing out all those different scenes, it’s amazing to think that something that started of so complicated and intricate has been transformed into softwares that help you to animate the subject.

Since then we’ve got 3D animation that we create from a computer, when animation was first created there were a all hand drawn and different techniques like cel or phenakistoscope were used to see the interactions of the drawings.

As a  task we were told to create a hand drawn animation, what I went for was a simple stop motion animation;

Drawing this was hard enough, keeping the sizes of the bouncing ball and the dog were hard as i didn’t have any tracing paper to make things easier. But making a stop motion of this sorts is quite simple and fun. Stepping up a notch would be to do something like this;

Alpha Centauri : Overall Feedback & Presentation

This project had its ups and downs, but in the end I think we all got through it okay. Our videos came out well as well as the website.

The presentation was made as a group, and we all contributed to the actual presenting..although there was a few interruptions by some group members but those have been overlooked as everyone got to say what they needed to say.

The input from everyone is what pulled the project to a finish.

Change of idea: Alpha Centauri

Unfortunately the Glitchy Geoff idea was scrapped as some members of the group didn’t seem to think that the idea would work as well as their new idea.

The new idea that they came up with was a new planet estate agents. Alpha Centauri is a planet that has everything and more that earth ever had. And as Earth is deteriorating, people of Earth have to decide where they want to go. We decided to do 4 1min 30 videos as in the brief it states they should be 6 minutes altogether. Most of the shots will be locations of Alpha Centauri as a planet and Centaurians promoting people of Earth to move here.

Other planets are available for them but we want them to come to Alpha Centauri..that’s what we want to show in the videos.

All the roles are the same as before, so I’ll be concentrating on the website. The website I feel is going to be a bit challenging for me as I’ve only ever made one which was to my preference and my HTML skills aren’t up to par. But this will also give me some more experience with website designing.

As a group we created a Facebook group to discuss matters, as some weren’t always able to come to meetings. On there we contributed to location spots, video ideas and general discussions.

Glitchy Geoff

We agreed on an unintentional teleportation web series, as it seemed like an interesting concept that could portray a humorous video series for most audiences.

Glitchy Geoff is a man of unfortunate events. Been given a faulty watch to review he is then forever in this cycle of random teleportation. This could happen at the best of times or at the worst.

The webisodes would be quite short vlog type videos that would show the watch malfunctioning him to a different place altogether. For instance, a scenario we came up with was if he were to be having a shower, he would teleport to the artic where he’d obviously be very cold. The videos wouldn’t show all the places he’s been too, just the flash of him gone and the flash of him back from where he’d teleported. Something we discussed was a Valentines edition where he tries to go on a series of dates with this one girl; this would fit in with the month of February. Some of the videos would have been shot by him, so him holding the camera vlogging, and other times it would be like a documentary where it would show you places he’s been.

Karl Pilkington’s An Idiot Abroad inspired the idea for this concept. Karl Pilkington as a person was the sort of character we wanted to play the role of Geoff, as his persona is a very laid back, no fuss sort of guy that gets puts into situations that don’t agree with him.

Inayat and I were in charge of the web design and social media and we had created a Twitter as that would able him to interact with his audience and fellowship. We also thought of making him an Instagram so his audience could also see where he’s been. As this is set in the future the use of technology would become a lot of integrated into our lives as humans so keeping social accounts online would most likely become mandatory.

Something that I as in charge of was Photoshopping Glitchy Geoff into random situations for his social media accounts. We wanted to make them funny and interesting, something that would definitely have a story behind them. There are some awkward scenarios as well as joyous ones, we wanted a mixed vary as we wanted to keep it as realistic as possible.

As a whole I think that this web series would be an interesting turn of events.

Channel Project

We were given this brief;

Your group’s task is to speculate into the future and design an online channel, with a defined audience, complete with site branding and sample video/ audio content. Toset up a fictional web-channel set at a projected point in the future which promotes or reports on one of the following areas:

Travel, health, entertainment, architecture, communications, politics, environment

The channel should contain a series of web-episodes which you must produce using video and audio technologies. The total online footage should not exceed 6 minutes when edited. The video content should have some recognizable connection with, or reference to the brand you have created.

A One-Day themed project will also be announced during the project and will be expanded on during the Production Lectures. The seminar group at the end of the One-Day project must upload this work to your blog ready for viewing. You may also choose to continue to develop these ideas to include in your final web-portfolio submission. Your group’s task is to speculate into the future and design an online channel, with a defined audience, complete with site branding and sample video/ audio content.

and within our group we brainstormed a few ideas which included telekinesis, robotics, unintentional teleporting, new spaces, worlds and living. We thought that doing a mockumentary style vlog of unintentional teleporting would be a different aspect to the channel project.

We then thought of roles for pre-production and production. we took in account what we all new how to do individually and what we would want to do, we came up with this;

Libby: Production manager, filming

Luke: Editor, filming

Suzie: Pre-production

Bob: Pre-production, logo design

Inayat: Web design, make up artist

Me: Web design

This is the experimented font that I created for my website, I’m still not so sure if I would want to use it just yet as I feel that it still needs some work to be done on it. It was done on illustrator, freehand.

There are a lot of faults with the flow of the actual letters individually and the thickness isn’t shown properly when you use it on photoshop or dreamweaver.

For now I’ll probably use a similar font for my website so I can work on this one!
